2020 REVIEW

The Indians were geared up for a new beginning in 2020, as GHSA reclassification moved them to 6-A public, where they were on a more level playing field. They ended up only playing 8 games due to pandemic issues. To reach that number, they had to pick up a few games at the spur of the moment. To make matters worse, of the 8 games played, only 5 of them were played with a full roster.

“I’m proud of the core group of kids for being able to keep their heads through all of that,” Coach Jeremy Green says, “and they got better as the year went on. For that, I am proud.”

OFFENSE

From a position of skill, Armuchee is strong this year. At quarterback, the position will be manned again by junior Chandler Santo.

The running back position will be a by-committee thing with all the talent at the skill positions, with senior Malik Drinic and junior Alex Wright getting the bulk of the carries.

Seniors JJ House and Kameron Parker will be the team’s top receivers.

At the offensive line of scrimmage, Green says his young linemen must grow up fast. “It’s an interesting dichotomy,” he says. “We have all these skilled upperclassmen and then these baby-faced underclassmen as offensive (and defensive) linemen.

DEFENSE

The defense will be led by senior defensive back Will Daniel and sophomores defensive back Jacob Seagraves and linebacker Ryland Steen, amongst a stable of other talented players.

LASTING THOUGHTS

“We’re going to have fun; that’s what the pandemic year taught me,” says Green. “To me, football is fun regardless, so I’ve always focused on the work side of it, the tough side of the game. Then, when we were forced to wonder if we’d even get to play our games, I was reminded that being around each other is part of the game. Getting to see each other is a privilege of the game. Getting on the field is a privilege of the game.”

Green continues: “So, from here on out, we’re going to still have our core values and our goals, but we’re going to have fun and enjoy being around each other also. That is always going to be a part of it. We learned during the pandemic that some things that we thought we had to do, we were really getting to do. We’re getting to do this. This team has done my heart good.”
